Capt. John 10 Hour Offshore Saturday September 10, 2016
September 17, 2016
With Captain Jill Williamsat the wheel the party boat Capt. John left Galveston’s Pier 19 with 81 anglers aboard. After exiting the jetties a run to the East began with squalls in the area.
The first platform fished was about 17 miles out and it had bonnethead sharks and Atlantic spadefish biting. Toward the end of the fishing there one of those rain squalls moved in and shortly afterward a move was made.
Three more platforms were fished and the baits of cut squid or Spanish sardines were doing their jobs on the spadefish and bonnetheads. Naturally, all platforms fished today had numerous red snapper being caught and quickly released. Five undersize ling were also caught and released, all coming from baits fished at or near the bottom. At the third platform an estimated 50 pound ling was seen swimming just below the surface but it did a crash dive and vanished into the depths. Seeing is beleiving , but not catching.
When time ran out this catch was in or headed for icing down in the fish boxes:
265 Atlantic spadefish
81 Bonnethead shark
1 Spanish mackerel
Justin Williams, Galveston, Captain Jill’s 10 year old son had 45 Atlantic spadefish and released red snapper. He obviously stays at the rail and fishes hard.
Patrick Lemire, Texas City, while really wanting to catch a ling the fact turned out to be numerous released red snapper to around 8 pounds. The largest of the ling that were caught was a little less than a couple of inches short and was released by a guy two spaces to my left. They were there, including the estimated 50 pounder seen…you never know who’s going to catch what when party boat fishing. Your personal best of a variety of species could be taken on your next trip.
